What does a noisy pool pump mean?

A symptom helps narrow the fault. It does not prove which part has failed, whether the water is safe, or whether underground pipework is sound.

Switch the pump off at its normal isolator if it is dry, smoking, producing a burning smell, repeatedly tripping protection, leaking onto electrical parts or making sudden metal contact noise. Do not open an electrical enclosure.

Limit
If the noise returns, stop repeated starts. Internal, electrical and hydraulic faults need testing before parts are ordered.

Can I keep running a noisy pump?+
Not if it is dry, losing prime, overheating, leaking, tripping or making severe mechanical noise. A minor vibration still deserves investigation because continued operation can damage seals, bearings, pipework or the motor.
Does a gravel sound mean stones are inside?+
Usually not. A gravel-like sound is often associated with cavitation, where poor inlet conditions affect the water entering the impeller. The restriction or operating condition still has to be found.
Will replacing the motor fix the noise?+
Only if testing confirms the motor is the source. Suction restriction, pipe resonance, impeller debris, mounting and hydraulic settings can remain after a motor change.
Why is a variable-speed pump noisy only at one speed?+
A particular speed can excite pipe or base resonance or move the system into a poor hydraulic operating point. Check mounting, flow path and programmed speed rather than assuming the motor has failed.
