Overview

A pump that will not fill may have a simple water-level or basket problem, an air leak, a blocked line, an incorrect valve position or an internal fault. Repeated dry starts do not diagnose the cause and can damage the mechanical seal.

Check first

  • Confirm the pool water sits high enough across the skimmer opening.
  • With power isolated, empty the skimmer and pump baskets and inspect the pump-lid seal for dirt, twisting or visible damage.
  • Confirm normal circulation valves are open using the system labels or a known setup photo.
  • Fill the pump housing with clean pool water if the manufacturer procedure allows, refit the lid and make one observed start.
  • Stop if the chamber does not fill promptly, air persists or the pump loses water again.

Stop and call a technician

  • The pump has already run dry or the seal area is leaking.
  • The system will not establish flow after one correct priming attempt.
  • A valve is seized, unlabelled or its correct position is uncertain.
  • The pump trips, hums without turning or shows an electrical fault.
  • The pool level keeps falling after top-up.
