How to prepare a pool water sample

Collect a clean, representative sample and bring the operating context needed to interpret the result.

Important limit

A symptom helps narrow the fault. It does not prove which part has failed, whether the water is safe, or whether underground pipework is sound.

Start with context

Observe before changing settings

A sample from the surface, a return jet or a contaminated container may not represent the pool. Good testing starts with clean collection, prompt delivery and notes about recent dosing, rain, top-ups and equipment operation.

Safe first checks

Use a clean sample bottle reserved for pool water. Rinse it several times with pool water before collection.
Take the sample away from return jets, skimmers, steps and recently treated areas.
Reach about an arm's length below the surface where it is safe to do so, with the opening facing away from surface debris.
Leave only the headspace needed to close the bottle securely and label the pool if carrying more than one sample.
Bring the sample to the Abbotsford shop promptly and keep it cool and out of direct sunlight.

Use a clean dedicated bottle and note the pool type, volume and sanitation system.

Choose a quiet location away from returns and surface debris. Do not lean over an unsafe edge.

Seal, label and keep the bottle cool and shaded. Never use a food or drink container that could be mistaken for drinking water.

Explain

At the shop, list recent chemicals, rain, top-up water, swimmer load and equipment faults before accepting a dosing plan.

Stop and arrange help

Do not keep operating or dosing through these conditions.

The water is cloudy enough to obscure the floor or safe sample access.
A chemical spill, unknown contamination or faecal incident has occurred.
Products may have been mixed or labels are missing.
The pool is green and circulation is not operating.
The sample is for a commercial or regulated aquatic facility requiring its own procedure.

Can I use a glass jar?+

A clean, secure plastic sample bottle reserved for pool water is safer to carry. Avoid drink bottles that could be mistaken for potable water and containers with detergent or food residue.

How much water should I bring?+

Bring enough for the shop's test system in a securely closed sample bottle. A normal dedicated pool sample bottle is suitable; call the shop if specialised testing or several water sources are involved.

Can I take the sample the night before?+

A fresh sample delivered promptly is better, especially for disinfectant readings. If delay is unavoidable, seal it, keep it cool and shaded, record the collection time and tell the tester.

Should the pump be running when I sample?+

The pool should normally be mixed by its usual circulation cycle, but do not sample beside a return. If the pump has failed or chemicals were just added, state that because the result may not represent the whole pool.
